San Francisco Nature Education Program

My students need donations to participate in the San Francisco Nature Education Program.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach a third grade Chinese bilingual class in California with students who are mainly new immigrants from China or Asia. Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood with over 85% of students on the free lunch program. Most families are poor and work under minimum wages. Although our school is lacking funding for many programs, our students preform exceptionally well in State Testing.

We'd like to participate in the San Francisco Nature Education Program to provide students with experiences that we can't provide in school. San Francisco Nature Education provides interactive environmental education programs that develop leadership and stewardship in youth and adults. Their school programs, Science and Nature for Underserved Youth, focus on providing educational enrichment to students from underserved communities. They use local parks as natural classrooms to observe local and migratory birds and to provide inspiring and engaging natural experiences. This program is extremely valuable and this science program in line with the third grade standards. This program will include two class presentations, two filed trips to the Bontanical Garden in the Golden Gate Park, and one field trip to a bird calling contest at.

However, the cost for this program is high and we don't have the funding to pay for it. We have already asked parents to donate money for school supplies and books. Asking them more money with add substantial burden on their shoulders. Therefore, we are looking for your help. This program not only provides students with hands-on opportunity to experience scientific observation, it also gives students more opportunities to practice their writing. Each student will receive a filed journal to record the species they observe and contact with. Then, write a reflection on each activity. They are also required to write a filed trip report after each field trip. Lastly, they have to write a summary on the entire program after the bird calling contest. These writing exercises are powerful learning experiences for students.

Your donation will ensure our students participation in this hands-on program. It is important for them to learn science at an early age and this program will give them an experience lasting for a life time.
