Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a place where students are encouraged to take risks in a subject that many have never experienced before: theater. Students learn the fundamentals of acting, improvisation, production design, and playwriting in a welcoming environment throughout the year in a variety of individual and group projects.
Open to every student within the boundary area, the school serves a student population with nearly ninety-eight percent qualifying for free or reduced priced lunch and a large number of English Language Learners and Special Education students.
These challenges, coupled with the difficulties common to most urban schools — gangs, street violence, and teenage pregnancy — make theater an excellent medium for social/emotional development and help my students with any life goal that they are striving to attain.
My Project
Our auditorium is shared with other schools in our building, so our theater class is scheduled to take place in what once was a large storage room. With an east-facing exterior wall, zero windows, and minimal air conditioning, the classroom gets uncomfortably hot during the summer months. Add 30-35 teenagers moving around in an acting scene, building a piece of scenery, or playing an acting game, and you get an idea how uncomfortable our 50 minutes together can be.
These two fans will provide much-needed relief during those hot and humid Chicago days and help move around the cool air that does make it to the classroom.
