My students need math games and hands on activities, such as a Math Quiz Show and Multiplication/Division games, to help them practice their mathematics skills in new ways!
I love teaching 4th grade in a rural, public school. My students are unique because they are mostly "farm" kids--which even in Kansas is the exception more than the rule. A few are even Amish and don't even have electricity in their homes! What an awesome opportunity it has been to instruct this varied group of students.
Unfortunately, the funding is simply not there for the upper grades to order "hands on" materials to aide in the teaching of math. I want to provide high impact, hands-on learning in all subjects in my classroom and that's tough to do with only textbooks and the few sparse supplies that are to be shared among upper grades.
My rural students get to touch and experience on their farms at home and so why not at school as well? I hope to be able to order supplies that allow students to practice skills in ways beyond the traditional--paper and pencils. These supplies range from number computation games to cubes for the practicing of math skills to math centers that are interactive and fun! What a way to get students to truly understand a topic--allow them to "play" games to master it! Or to sort and classify through hands on learning. To be quizzed about measurement in a "game show" format instead of with a paper test. The possibilities are extensive!
Remember that employee at the store that couldn't count change back to you? Or the lumber yard employee that was struggling to understand measurement? I want the buck to stop HERE--in my classroom. Whether my fourth grader becomes a lawyer or a doctor or a farmer or a grocery store clerk, they need to know basic math skills. These supplies will empower me, as the teacher, to give these students hands-on quality learning that will last a lifetime!
