My students who will be entered into the school district's Superintendant Art Awards program need 25 copies of "The Little Drawing Book," and 4 graphite pencil sets.
I teach art at a high poverty labeled school in South Carolina. My art class is the only visual arts program offered and serves approximately 135 students each year. We are on a 4 x 4 class schedule but may return to the traditional schedule and even more students will be introduced to my class.
Every year our district holds the Superintendent Art Awards. Each school in the district has 24 students in the show. We hang their artwork in a gallery style setting and they receive certificates for art proficiency. Four of the students from each school are entered into a contest for a first, second, and third place prize. For the 2007-2008 school year, our school had a student win the first place prize and we couldn't be more excited.
But then, I looked out at all the other students who worked so diligently all year long on their artwork. They were excited for their classmate who won, but I feel that they deserve more than a certificate.
I would like to give them a motivational reward to continue their work in the arts. If I could provide for them a book that teaches new techniques for drawing and encourages them to try other artistic endeavors I believe they would feel more accomplished.
The other schools in our district are located in more populous areas and get help from local businesses to purchase merit items for their students who are entered into the program.
The four students who are entered into the juried exhibition are placed under a little more stress than the other students and I would like to provide them with a drawing set and sketchbook as well. I would like for all my students to feel like winners that night!
Your help would make my Superintendent Art Award entries really feel "Super!" You would make it possible for them to all feel as though they have truly accomplished something. Being chosen from 135 students to be entered into a art exhibition is nothing to laugh at and I feel that by giving them a little something as a reward for being chosen will motivate them to continue their hard work.
