My students need a much more extensive collection of authentic children's literature that they can read and learn from, such as Stone Fox and Frog and Toad Together.
I currently teach a group of very disinterested first graders in a high-need school. I have 24 first graders in my classroom, at least half of which are living in poverty.
I struggle day in and day out with my students trying to get them to become engaged in reading and writing. Most students have little to no access to books at home and enjoy spending a good amount of time reading the books that I have in my classroom library. The problem is that I have only a limited number of books in my classroom library since I am a new teacher and those books are not all rich in literature experiences. By donating this set of books to my classroom, I am hoping to encourage a love of reading that I am so desperate to impart to these students as well as a sense of how one constructs a story.
I am requesting a collection of books that I can use to read aloud and encourage students to love stories as much as I do and teach students about ways in which good writers write.
By donating these books to my classroom, I will be able to open up a whole new world of possibilities to these students who already have a sense of helplessness when it comes to their futures. I need to equip these young minds with the tools that they will use for the rest of their lives in order to become successful and productive members of society.
