Take Home Panther Pocket "Books"
I teach Kindergarten in a Title One School (90%+ free/reduced lunch) in South Carolina. It is so important to get our children off to a great start in their educational experience and having books to take home and read with a parent/guardian would be immensely helpful. I introduce all of my lessons with literature and thus far have instilled a love of reading to my students. Monthly, my class wins the Governor's Reading Honor Roll for the amount of books read in class! I would love for our children to be able to read at least one book per night, that is my goal.
Unfortunately, resources are limited at home because many of our parents are single and working one or two jobs to make ends meet. The public library is not on the agenda because of time restraints and transportation issues. I send home books from the classroom library on a daily basis and it has become quite tattered and dated.
My dream would be for each student to have a take home Pocket "Book" whereas he/she could bring home 5 books a week, to read 1 per night with a parent or guardian. Each Monday, they would return last weeks items and pick 5 new books for the upcoming week!
I believe that the ability to bring books home will reinforce the children's love of literature and also create stronger family bonds. Many of our parents need to refresh their reading skills and what better way than to read to their kindergartener? Cherrydale Panthers are extremely appreciative of any gestures of kindness bestowed upon them. You should witness their joy when they receive a 'special' pencil from the principal, or a 'stinky' sticker from their teacher! Can you imagine the delight in these children's eyes if they were to pick out books to take home in their Panther Pocket "Book"?
