Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

The world of fiction seems to have taken over!!! I teach 3rd grade in a public school just outside of Cleveland, Ohio and we are in need of some reality. Many students in my class are facing a true obstacle when attempting to comprehend and interpret non-fiction text. Most of our classroom library is filled with fictional stories. Therefore, when children are reading on their own during silent reading or when they have an extra couple of minutes throughout the day, they immediately go towards fiction, basically because they have no choice! This causes some confusion when trying to decode non-fictional articles, stories, or essays. We are in need of some non-fiction materials! It will be much easier for students to relate to the world around them if they are constantly reading about it. Students enjoy reading things that relate to them and their community. They learn more when they can do this. I believe these non-fictional materials will give a boost to those students who have trouble picking up a book. Instead of looking at a book, they will have the option of picking up a magazine, which many times, looks much more exciting! When students are reading more, they are becoming more fluent, gaining a broader range of vocabulary, as well as, a better sense of the written word. Studies prove that students learn more when they are excited about what they are learning. It is much more exciting to learn about the world around them! You can be that change that just one child needs to look at reading in a whole new light!!!
