I teach science at Maui High School on beautiful Maui, Hawaii. This is a public school with a mostly pacific islander population. I have 4 classes of freshmen taking physical science and 3 classes of 11th grade chemistry. The administration claims that it is the students’ responsibility to purchase their own calculators, but most of the kids do not do so. I encourage the students to buy calculators for themselves but this is not what they, or their parents, chose to spend their money on. They are happy, friendly children but many believe they are destined to work in the resorts after they graduate high school - therefore education is not high on their priority list. I think that by using calculators in the science classroom, more time can be spent by answering the big questions at hand and less time will be spent on doing tedious mathematical calculations. We need to perform calculations in science during almost every experiment so these calculators would not be for just one project but many projects and day to day use. Please help me by donating a class set of basic calculators.
