Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher in a Title I school that serves approximately 1400 students. I am currently teaching a self- contained classroom that consists of sixteen students. Of the sixteen students, three are special-needs students and seven are English Language Learners. The majority of my students are considered to be of low socio-economic status. The problem that my students and I face is that our classroom carpet is much too small for us. We desperately need a larger carpet to comfortably accommodate everyone when we gather together everyday. In my diverse classroom, I believe that a hands-on approach to learning is so much more meaningful to the students, especially those who are ELL and have special-needs. Six-year olds are naturally active learners and perform best when allowed to leave their desks to gather comfortably, discuss freely, and manipulate ideas/concepts. When the students and I meet on the carpet for instruction and demonstration, the learning experience always seems to be much more relaxed and worthwhile. Unfortunately, our rather worn and undersized carpet just doesn't work well for our large group; however, a colorful, oval shaped carpet that provides a designated seating area for each child would be a tremendous boost to our learning environment! Donor, please consider making our classroom's "Carpet Conference" roomier and more manageable. Thank you so much for your consideration of my proposal.
