Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my fourth graders live at or below the poverty level. Receiving clothing, food, school supplies, health care and financial support is a part of their lives. However, this does not mean that they can not provide support to others. I want each of my students to develop a long term relationship with an elderly resident of a nearby nursing home. "Reaching Across the Generations" will be a community service project where twenty-four nine year olds will visit their elderly buddy each month in order to develop an awareness in cultural diversity and to increase their self esteem within the community.
Once a month, we will walk the 3/4 of a mile back and forth to the small nursing home near our school. Upon arrival we will take the elevator to the third floor activity room. The children will sit at the large round tables next to their resident buddy, most confined to wheelchairs, loungers and walkers. During the hour visit, each child will help the resident complete a craft project and have a snack, which will be provided by the nursing staff. When it is time to leave, the completed craft kits, such as decorative door hangers and butterfly magnets will decorate the resident's rooms. As the children clasp the wearable wallets and felt animal bracelets on their buddies belt loops and wrists, the resident smiles will light up the room. And, perhaps, the residents won't mind taking so many pills once they can drink from their own snap a picture mug made with their fourth grade buddy. This proposal is a request to fund the twenty four craft kits needed for each of the ten visits.
When the residents appear detached, confused or infantile, my students will, over time, gain a greater understanding and empathy for aging people, and eventually, others different from themselves. They will also feel as though they are important members of the community, making a commitment to a long term project that brings joy and companionship to those who are lacking it in their lives. "Reaching Across the Generations" will provide a powerful lesson that community service empowers us touch the hearts of other people and ultimately, our own hearts.
