I teach multiple grades (9-12) in an alternative school. My students all have significant Learning Disabilities and/or Emotional Disorders and they often have long histories of being unsuccessful in traditional school settings. One huge obstacle they face is getting and keeping a job. This is particularly important for my older students who will soon graduate. Very often students are unaware of how they look and sound when they interact with others, and as a result they do poorly in job interviews and in other interactions with authority figures. My solution to this problem is to video tape mock job interviews and role plays so students have the opportunity to practice these skills and then to review the tape and evaluate their performance. When I have used this method in the past, students have responded positively and made lasting changes in the way they interact with others. Unfortunately, I am currently at a school that lacks the technology resources for this activity. By funding this project you can help empower my at risk students to make positive, productive moves toward becoming successful citizens.
