I teach a seventh grade self contained class at an under-resourced public school in New York City. My students face many challenges; yet they are eager to succeed. Their math scores are very low. They have difficulty completing worksheets or other practice tasks and would much rather work on the computer.
Drilling multiplication and division skills is both time-consuming and dreadfully boring. However, the Math Shark is an interactive, hand-held tool that offers many different games that engage students while reinforcing basic math skills. Students will enjoy spending time playing math games and reviewing or building on skills at their own pace. As they strengthen their arithmetic skills, they will be able to more easily grasp more advanced math concepts.
This is the sort of electronic equipment my students would have at home if their families had enough resources to invest in home computers and software. Unfortunately, they do not have that luxury. Please consider giving my students the advantage offered by Math Shark by funding this proposal.
