ESOL teachers introduce new Language Arts units of study to students for the first time using mentor books, carefully selected books that clearly illustrate a literary device that the students need to learn. Teachers check the books out from the school's library, if the books are available, read the books aloud to the students and then they discuss the books with the kids. After the students discuss the books, they independently practice and share what they have learned with the class. Unfortunately, because ESOL kids arrive at different points during the school year and because English is not their first language, they don't get exposed to all the great books that other kids have been exposed to while growing up. So having those great mentor books around all the time in the classroom will enable me to read the books aloud to the kids at any point during the year and expose them to great English literature.
