Our students struggle even more with mental health upon return from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is in addition to their regular daily challenges as a teenagers with peer pressure, anger, anxiety, grief, depression and soft skills development such as communication and relationship building. As these challenges can interfere with their academics, I work with them to learn coping strategies to manage their emotions, find balance, refocus, prioritize in order to return to their academics with better self control and higher executive functions. These coping strategies include interactive furniture such as exercise balls so that they can release their bottled-up anxieties expressed as anger, journaling to process their grief or express and sort through their emotions and a zen space with a bean bag chair and lap desk to return to their academics without distractions from a classroom overflowing beyond capacity. My students will use these tools to improve their mental health so that they can improve their academics, self awareness, self esteem and social skills. Learning how to use these coping tools effectively and in a zen space will help them find the balance between learning in an overstimulating classroom versus being alone at home online with their learning.
