My fifth and sixth grade students love for reading is inspiring. Unfortunately our library lacks cultural diversity. Multicultural literature encourages identity formation, breaks down cultural barriers, and promotes empathy, unity, and respect. When students see themselves reflected in the words they read, engagement increases and connections are made. There are many benefits to a cultural diverse library, but its greatest power is the ability to bring others together no matter the distance, culture, or ethnicity. I am asking for multiple copies of sixteen books including As Brave As You, Starfish and Miracle's Boys Exposing children to reading material that reflects themselves and their culture fuels an understanding that bridges the gap between them and the rest of the world.
