Do you recall having a mentor in your life? Someone who inspired you, taught you what you know, and shaped who are you? After lots of research and careful consideration, I am requesting these mentor texts to help give my students authentic examples to study and imitate, encouraging them take risks and grow their own understanding, craft, and voice. Not only will these books have a special place in our classroom library, but they will be part of my toolkit when I teach mini-lessons, as well as when I conference with students. These books include opportunities for me to demonstrate specific teaching points (making predictions, inferring, analyzing, synthesizing, etc.) and mentor students with concrete examples of craft techniques (theme, repetition, dialogue, text structure, etc.) which impact both reading and writing. Mentor texts help inspire learners. They allow students to make connections and mirror skills or strategies. We all benefit from concrete examples and not only are these mentor texts excellent resources, but they also support my philosophy that we have so much to learn from others. We can learn from established authors as well as our peers. We each have something to learn and something to share. Thank you for your consideration to support this project!
