I teach at an elementary public school in New Mexico. My students are fourth graders special needs. Most have learning disabilities in reading, writing and math. Others have oral language impairments that makes it difficult for them to process information presented orally. Our school is currently in corrective action, which means that we have not met the mandated Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) three years in a row. Our special education population is high and have the lowest scores on standardized tests. It is obvious that what we are doing is not helping them learn and retain information.
