Have you ever heard the saying, "what the teacher says goes"? Well in our classroom that saying does not apply. Okay, maybe it does to a certain degree, but our room is mostly student-driven. The students decide when they need to wiggle and giggle and move around. They also decide what they want to learn about--whether that's inquiring about ooey gooey worms, building a town like ours, or writing a non-fiction book as a class. Another way that the students leave their footprints in our room is in our physical classroom environment. They have the freedom to make choices about what goes on our walls, what materials we use, and what our classroom looks like in general. I would like to enable my students further by adding some Reggio updates to our classroom that the students have expressed a desire to have and that fit the Reggio Emilia model. If you aren't familiar with the Reggio Emilia model, it is the idea that all learning should be student-driven and that all materials and aspects of the classroom environment should be natural. We would like to make some changes to our room that include getting some baskets for books and station work that are made of natural, Reggio-inspired materials and getting more visual artwork materials. Our current baskets are plastic and have seen better days. It would be helpful for us to have some sturdier baskets to hold our materials and help us transport our materials around the room. My students love to have the freedom to choose where they work and baskets will allow this to happen. Additionally, the students have really taken an interest in expressing themselves through visual artwork thus the need for an easel and paint jars. These changes will help transform our classroom for the kiddos!
