I have a rainbow of students who like to read or look at picture books. Many of my students have learning disabilities as well as other disabilities. Our school is a shutdown unit who has some interaction with the outside community. My students conduct community service projects every year, which they enjoy doing. They are very artistic and creative. They enjoy completing their academic lessons with a hands-on project. They hunger for knowledge and seek ways to accomplish their goals to become better students who will be well rounded, empathic and self-sufficient. They can be sponges at times when they are given the right tools. I know how much they want to learn when they ask me questions students their age should already know. My students need me at times to help them when they have no one else. They are "my kids" and they are light bulbs waiting to be turned up, so they could shine brighter.
