My project aims to provide high-tech augmentative and alternative communication devices (AAC), like iPads, to students who struggle to communicate. 2/5 of my students are non-verbal. These specific students are not able to use picture cards, communication boards, or sign language to communicate with others, resulting in them relying on their behaviors to get their needs met. This has caused significant problems with accessing their adaptive curriculum, expressing their wants and needs, and communicating effectively with classmates/teachers. With an iPad, these students would have customizable AAC devices programmed to be his/her “voice” in the classroom. The student would be able to voice his/her wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings. He/she would be able to voice opinions and ask questions. And more importantly, be able to communicate with family, friends, teachers, and peers.
