Middle School is a pivotal time in my students' lives. They are learning about who they are and growing from where they've been or really where they come from. I want to read these novels in my English-Creative Writing classes to inspire my students to write and think about their place in this world---about how they can affect their lives and others' lives in a positive way. I want my students to know that they can make a difference; no matter how small their actions might be. The novel, WE BEAT THE STREETS, is a true success story of three boys who made a difference in their own lives and eventually the lives of others through their determination and perseverance through many struggles and trials. I feel that by reading this particular novel my students will be inspired to make a difference in their own lives no matter what their circumstances may be. The novel, OUT OF MY MIND, is a fictional story based on the reality of overcoming obstacles as a handicapped individual. The main character gives us a different perspective through her eyes----emphasizing not to accept others' perception of your identity. My hope is that my students can see how they can make a difference even in their small interactions with those who are different than them. I want them to change their perceptions of others' identity as well as their own.
