Our school is located in the Columbia River Gorge and is a rural district serving students in and around the White Salmon Valley. I have students from 4th-8th grade for 1-2 trimesters each year. Students come from diverse cultural, economical, and geographical backgrounds. We have many generational trade families, immigrant farm workers, Native communities, and families seeking the recreational thrills of the gorge. The art studio is a place to make connections and explore choice based art making to help better understand themselves and each other. We focus on developing craft, observing, expressing, envisioning, understanding art worlds, reflecting, and stretching and exploring beyond our comfort level. I follow teaching through artistic behaviors three sentence curriculum: - What do artists do? - The child is the artist. - The classroom is their studio.
