The very first topic in the Scholastic News Magazine subscription is entitled "Friendship." I plan on using this first issue to set the tone of my classroom and create a welcoming learning environment. You may be familiar with the achievement gap in the US. One factor is the lack of rigor students are given in the classroom. Another is a student's lack of social-emotional skills that keep them from focusing on their learning. My school takes pride in both aspects of a child's learning; however, this year is going to be challenging. With the resources I have chosen, I will be able to provide my students with relevant lessons that engage students in rigorous content while also practicing coping skills.
