One of the joys of teaching English is the flexibility in choice of content. One of the joys of teaching the sciences is learning how they touch everything. This year in English as I've taught informational text, we've examined credit card agreements, state ballet measures, psychopaths, collage admissions, forensics, the right to privacy, the Native Peoples of Arizona, President Washington's Farewell Address, and a topic that each student felt was personally important. In the age of the internet I want my students to be able to research then understand the things that are important to them. Our most difficult barrier to this comes as we research STEM fields. Our five classroom computers can have difficulty supporting more resource intensive websites and activities. General research, note taking from one source at a time is a time-proven method. However, as we delve into more modern skills and want to "run the numbers," compare video to still images, use learning resources and web-based software, etc. we could use more power and flexibility in the classroom. The ongoing donation of more modern and more portable technologies will provide us the flexibility and capacity to better incorporate the multidisciplinary approach I want to encourage in my English classes. I can budget $100 a month personally to this project and hope that you can contribute to this education as well.
