As primarily a math and science teacher, I'm building my classroom library from scratch. I envision a library filled with books that reflect and honor the diversity among my students. I believe in the importance of students seeing themselves and their shared experiences in the books they read. My fifth graders will use these books to cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves, their peers, and the interconnectedness among us. I plan to use these books to facilitate learning that's aligned with the heritage that's celebrated each month, beginning with National Hispanic Heritage Month in September.
