In this project, I am asking for flexible seating options. In a technology-driven and ever-changing world, classrooms need to reflect this change. These seating options are as unique as the students that will use them. I believe in a balance between structure and comfort in the classroom. Students need a sturdy and constant place to call home within the classroom, somewhere that means business and learning. When students are in college or in an office setting, they will need to know how to sit at desks and at tables, in order to follow work procedure and accomplish tasks. We do a fine job of preparing them for that in school. However, that business space needs a counterpart. Students may often work at home in an environment of their choosing- something that may resemble a couch, bean bag, or even bed. While I don't want beds in my classroom, I want students to have the opportunity to feel physically comfortable in their classroom. Flexible seating offers the opportunity for both comfort and creativity. The tall cafe table will allow for small group conversations. The clear chairs will surround a coffee table for comfortable discussions. And most wanted: the floor pillows and lap desks will allow students to read and work curled up and relaxed. When you are reading a book that you love, do you curl up on the couch, or sit at the dining room table? Where do you find yourself engaging in some of your most intelligent or intellectual conversations? In a desk next to your peers, or sitting around a coffee table in a non-threatening and more natural environment?
