Currently, I have a starter set of informational books and realistic fiction. I need more books that are just above where students are at as readers, and books that meet my most struggling readers. This list includes National Geographic Readers about different animals that will be used for research and for just understanding the world around them. Graphic novels like Ricky Ricotta and The Lunch Lady help pull in my reluctant readers into reading. Historical fiction will help push my more advanced readers in individual and small group discussions. My fantasy titles will help open up the world of imagination for creative writing. This project is to give students access to a variety of genres and to boost their confidence that they CAN read interesting books that are at their level. Also, there is nothing like the motivation that says "I will get to read that Dragon Masters book soon. I just need to get stronger at reading!" This motivational pull is greater than any small reward or competition I could throw their way. That spark to read is the ultimate prize. My students know that to be a good reader they need to see through the eyes of a writer, and to be a good writer they need to see through the eyes of a reader. Without quality books that students are interested in, this process of recognizing writing qualities I want them to emulate, and the ability to recognize good literature when one sees it bottle necks what should be a natural process for both myself as a reader and teacher, and they as students.
