Did you know that a study of children's books published in 2015 shows that 73.3% of these books featured white characters? Books can shape children's experiences and it is important that the books that we provide our students with demonstrate a wide variety of human experiences and cultures. My students deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read! I chose books like Happy in Our Skin and The Name Jar to help my students to see that we are all different but we have so many things in common. Then books like Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match and Two Homes to specifically reference the cultures of specific children in my classroom so they can see themselves in books that we read in our class so they know they are special and important. I teach my children to lead with kindness and stories that highlight fairness and diversity can increase empathy and help my students to live with open hearts and open minds.
