My classroom has a focus on teaching/learning through the lens of multiple perspectives, not content to settle for the old adage that "history is written by victors." I empower students to make up their own minds about difficult historic decisions -- but they must justify their position and do opposition research on a situation's multiple perspectives. When I teach history through multiple perspectives, including students' own perspective, and students realize that they are a part of that history and can form their own opinions about it, we can then discuss difficult and emotional topics from the past and connect them with events that are currently shaping the world students are growing in. We embrace social media to extend the classroom beyond the traditional four walls, providing opportunities for students to reach outside the classroom, while inviting the rest of the world to interact inside the classroom.
