Our district recently adopted the Lucy Caulkins' reading and writing units of study. One of the challenges of implementing and administering these programs is a lack of books. We are given mentor texts with each unit, however, there is only one copy of each book. In 4th grade, we do book studies in realistic fiction, non-fiction, and historical fiction. I do not have enough books in these genres in my classroom library to properly support my students in their studies. A variety and volume of books is key to inspiring young readers! "Tiger Rising" is the mentor text for realistic fiction. We do an in-depth study of the characters and I only have a few copies. This is difficult work and I believe it is imperative to put a book in each students hands. Students need to interact with the text directly. This would allow students to be more successful. The document camera would allow me to project the required texts from the curriculum. This is especially helpful when I lack enough books to put one in each students' hands. Giving students a visual of the text while I am reading it will increase engagement, comprehension, and focus. This will also improve learning outcomes.
