Imagine our students embarking on their journey under the grand mural depicting the launching of the transcontinental railroad in 1863! Next, arriving at Jack London Square in Oakland, students board a ferry bound for Pier 41 sailing under the Bay Bridge to the San Francisco piers. And finally, they travel from San Francisco to Alcatraz, the rock. This project is an interdisciplinary opportunity for these young learners to experience the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), of our great state. Students have studied the migration of salmon from the American River, through the SF Bay to the Pacific Ocean (the science). They mapped the journey of the salmon with computers (the technology). We watch a documentary and complete a lesson on the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, once one of the world's largest suspension bridges (the engineering). The trip begins and ends under one of the grandest murals in our state (the art). Finally, we calculate timetables, cost, and fundraising for the trip (the math). In sum, the trip makes history, science, technology, engineering, art and math jump out of their textbooks. The experience ignites awareness of a dynamic world. The goal inspires learning. Please be a part of the classroom of the world!
