Students become stronger readers when they are taught to read using phonics skills. During guided reading groups and center activities, I look to have my students interact with words using a multi-sensory approach to apply the phonics skills they are learning. By allowing students to work with magnetic letters, letter tiles, and other hands-on activities, they will gain a deeper understanding of phonemes in words and apply it when reading decodable texts. As I am early in my teaching career, the amount of materials I have available in my classroom is not sufficient to allow each child individual access during guided reading groups or during center time to such activities or books. I would love to provide students with many opportunities to work with words using a tactile approach and the chance to practice these skills in text. By donating to our project, you will be giving students a variety of materials and activities to increase engagement as they work to become better readers and writers. These activities will provide students at every level with phonics practice from letter sounds and CVC words to long vowels and word families. A gift card to Teachers Pay Teachers will allow me to provide books for students to take home and continue to practice these skills in reading at home, when they otherwise would not have access to these take-home books. Students will be able to decode words quickly and efficiently, allowing them to experience the joy of reading and the world that unfolds in front of them as a result.
