My students and I are bilingual and communicate primarily in American Sign Language and written English. We consider English and ASL to be two separate but equally important languages. During the year, students participate in both Writing Workshop and ASL Workshop. In Writing Workshop, students complete steps to write a story in written English. They brainstorm, draft, revise, edit and publish their creations on paper and by typing. In ASL Workshop, they follow a similar process to tell a story in ASL. They do this by filming videos. Currently, my 11 students are sharing a computer and class iPad. My students struggle to access and navigate a computer that is not a touch screen. With an additional iPad we will be able to work more efficiently because more students can independently work on typing or filming their work. The benefit of iPads are endless and with your help we create a more inclusive environment for my students when it comes to technology.
