To create an environment most conducive to learning for students with autism and their peers with special needs, I had to examine the way in which classroom design elements spaces are organized. As such, design elements traditionally associated with schools, such as highly-colorful, visually striking graphics can be counterproductive for ASD students and other students with special needs trying to self-modulate their reactions when taking in too much visual information at one time. This is the case in my classroom. The disarray of furniture can be highly distracting or disturbing to special needs students and they might have difficulty giving attention to relevant information in a room full of distracting visual stimuli. You can help the special education students learn in a way that helps minimize potential distractions by putting them in the driver’s seat of these new chairs. Their focus will be on relevant information instead of how to rearrange the different color chairs into a pattern that makes sense to them. With special needs and autistic children, it is extremely important to consider colors when designing the classroom. Every person is a unique individual, so in a group situation like a classroom, it can be extremely difficult to modify every part of an environment to meet every individual need. However, to make a positive difference, especially in the area of focus and visual stimuli, having the same color chairs will produce a distraction free environment conducive to learning. Color influences mood. Some colors induce a comfortable feeling while others induce the feeling of excitement and stimulation. The classroom environment is extremely important. The color white improves attention and instills feelings of positivity. Please consider helping to purchase these chairs to place the students in the driver’s seat of their learning by creating a sense of positivity.
