I teach in a Title I school in Missouri. We have a lot of children who come from very poor homes. Many of my children are not exposed to books, writing or any academic experiences. Many of my parents can not read or write well themselves. My classroom is full of children who are at-risk of not being successful in school. Because of their lack of skills I need visual concrete ways to help them become sucessful in school. A rug will give my students a visual place to sit and touch. An easel will provide a place to show Big Books, to write on so they can model, we can use magnetic letters and a variety of other uses. On Fridays we work with struggling kindergarten and first graders and an easel would make modeling writing and reading so much easier.
