As I have talked to multiple classroom teachers, I have noticed a theme. A third grade teacher told me about a graphic novel that the students all want to read and have to wait to read it, because there is only one copy. A fifth grade teacher told me that his students have been been passing around a graphic novel and some kids who were desperately wanting to read it, haven't had a chance yet. I have chosen graphic novels and poetry books for this project that are high interest and in high demand. Our students should not have to wait for long periods of time to have a book that they want to read. Especially when they are striving readers who need to be reading a voluminous amount of books to improve their reading skills. There are many stories out there from literacy experts, authors and others about how graphic novels are a gateway to other types of reading and have helped them to develop a love of reading. Graphic novels also help with visualizing, vocabulary and comprehension. "And that these masterful pieces of literature are, indeed, full-fledged members of the book family. Are, indeed, full-fledged literary components that deserve not just to be placed into the hands of our students, but also taught alongside other books. To be held up as shining examples of literary greatness that we should appreciate, promote, and celebrate alongside all of the other books we have." -Pernille Ripp
