Math is considered a universal language. It is a subject that often polarizes students into two groups: those who love the power that numbers wield and those who fear the abstract nature at its core. Through the decades, math education has evolved from lessons stressing rote memorization of facts to the present pedagogy where instructors share the ever-growing possible real-life applications that mathematics allows. It is so important to cultivate an interest in this field at an early age. Many times, elementary math teachers use manipulatives in hands-on activities hoping to help students stay engaged and tackle problems that are not always concrete in nature. When students reach junior high school, many lessons are taught using a workbook as the primary resource. After teaching for 27 years, I have learned that all learners, regardless of age ir ability level, enjoy tactile activities that bring “boring” problems on paper to life in new and exciting ways. Many of the supplies I am requesting will allow my classes the opportunity to create colorful depictions of math concepts using tools like FACEing Math and having cooperative groups solve challenging Shell math tasks. In my classroom, we often use marker boards when practicing fluency skills, so dry-erase markers are a necessity. The ID badges are part of my positive behavior incentive system, and decorations will be used to connect our school’s theme (“Sailing into Success”) to my 7th grade math curriculum. I am so excited to start this new year with all of the tools and supplies my students will need to make ratios, proportions, integers, and beyond a part of their math knowledge base. This will allow them to experience success in future more abstract courses like Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. All help in attaining this goal is much appreciated.
