Without even looking around my classroom, I can tell you the items that I have to provide in order for my students to be successful in yearbook and photography in art: zero. This is my second year working at this school and last year was a struggle. We learned different apps to use on our phones and ways to use whatever borrowed cameras we could find that were 10+ years old and outdated, but in a Title I school this can be quite the challenge. When working in a community where parents work two jobs or more just to provide their children with just the basics for life, asking for money through a fundraiser or asking students to supply anything beyond a pencil and paper is not an option.
I want every single one of my students to have the tools to be successful in my class without displaying to others that their families may not be able to provide those options to them at that moment.
These cameras and memory cards would benefit our class by giving students technology that would be considered basics for the photography profession. In all of my art classes, I try to make them as career based as possible so that students can get a taste of what the real world looks like while still fostering their creativity. In our current situation, I am unable to give them those options and we are relying on outdated or barely working technology. My kids take every opportunity given to them, and go above and beyond every time. I am constantly amazed by their drive, and want to find a way to push them even more. By having better technology, we can accomplish that goal together.
