I teach in an inner city elementary school with a population of 500 students. Our entire student population receives free breakfast and lunch. I have 18 second grade students in my classroom, which includes the students with special needs for the grade level. In order for their unique needs to be met in the classroom, learning sometimes looks different. Have you ever felt left out; like you just don't belong? Special education students are mainstreamed into the classroom, and I often do not have the materials that are needed to make them feel like they are a part of our classroom community either due to their learning differences or their personal limitations. They are eager to learn and show their creativity in ways that are unique to their learning style. In order for special needs to be met in the classroom, learning and teaching sometimes looks different.
