Math is one of the most difficult subjects to teach, especially in the upper grades because of the abstract concepts introduced. I am implementing a "Fun Friday" in math which will entail math centers that students will rotate through for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Each center will be designed to reinforce concepts that have previously been introduced. Research shows that students need to be exposed to a concept at least twenty times before they have mastered the concept. Weekly math centers focused on review of concepts will help ensure that students have multiple opportunities to see concepts repeatedly through hands-on activities and reading materials meant to engage student learning. I would like to see a minimum of six centers weekly for students to work on. I will add new concepts to the rotation as they are introduced, while still rotating old concepts for constant review. To support these learning center activities I am requesting one Upper Grades Math Manipulative Library, one Middle School Fraction Kit, a Math Quiz Game Show CD-ROM, one Ready-To-Go Listening Center for 8, Write & Wipe Answer Boards, Student Decimal Practice Boards, and subscriptions to Scholastic MATH magazine. The Tabletop Writing Center will organize our materials and supplies. In addition, I am looking to create a weekly interactive bulletin board for students to work on when they have completed daily assignments. This interactive bulletin board will review the previous week's lesson which is meant to reinforce and clarify any misconceptions learned. The more hands-on activities I can create in the classroom the more engaged I hope my students will be. I believe these activities will engage student learning and help improve students scores on standardized tests. I also strongly believe that this exploratory approach to learning will help students to become better problem solvers, which directly impacts students learning across all curriculum.
