My school is one of two, new, public schools within a former failed school's building. We are located in a high poverty area in New York City, with over 95% of students receiving free lunch. The students are predominantly English Language Learners from West Africa. Unfortunately, we do not have adults that speak their language and they are thrust into classrooms, where they cannot communicate. This causes great frustration and leads to plenty of behavior problems. The students are very bright and pick up quickly on new and exciting information, but the books in our library are not exciting enough to captivate them.
