Paired with "The Odyssey" by Homer, these book options allow students to discover and discuss new and modern adaptations of 'The Hero's Journey' in small literature circles. Each novel is written by a strong female author, and allows us as readers to explore the Feminist Literary Criticism lens from not only the perspective of Homer's original writings, but that of these modern adaptations. As students read "The Odyssey" we will track the 'monsters and magic' that Odysseus discovers along his journey back home and compare and contrast to the YAL fantasy novel archetypal characters.
