There are many students at my school who live with multiple families in motels; these are students who do not have their own study space or bedroom. I counsel many of them through group sessions, and know that many of our students have it really rough at home. School is a place where students look forward to being because it is a safe place. 80% of our student population is designated as being socioeconomically disadvantaged . Additionally, many students are learning English as a second language and are students who are "average" grades, but they still are looking for something more. They have a yearning to learn, but need the help in goal setting, realizing strengths, and seeing what careers and universities are out there for them.
