In an effort to integrate Life, Earth, Space, & Physical Science into one cohesive curriculum, we have developed a storyline that highlights the interconnection of all science disciplines in order for us to understand life on Earth. Our students are engaging in a year long project based learning curriculum that challenges them to find solutions to issues faced by society today. The first part of the school year, students identify, research, and explain problems faced by over-consumption of natural resources. Students then explore possible solutions including space colonization. The culminating project is for students to plan a mission to Mars. As part of this project, students will learn about remote sensing technology and how we acquire information about objects at a distance. We would like to obtain a class set of programmable drones. The goal is to have students learn about the benefits and limitations of remote sensing techniques by programming a flight path for a drone that must hit a designated target. Once students hit the "target" on a simulated surface of Mars, they will begin to gather "data." Students will learn about computer coding, as well as, about the difficulties associated with remote sensing.
