Flexible seating isn't just a fad, it is a response to the researched and recognized fact: growing bodies need to move! Moreover, students learn better and have increased focus when their bodies are comfortably able to meet their need for movement. Little bodies need to move to help little brains work most efficiently. To maximize my students' learning power, I have already provided some alternative seating—a floor table and a carpet space—but I would like to expand their options to include standing tables (hence the bed risers), yoga balls, and wiggle cushions. Every professional development workshop and meeting I attend I am reminded of how focus wanes with inactivity. Providing children ways to engage their gross motor needs in a classroom-appropriate manner will improve that focus, and consequently increase their engagement and learning.
