This project pays for 9 Chromebooks for our 5th grade classrooms. We plan to start many forward-thinking programs with these Chromebooks.
First, we will introduce our students to everything computers have to offer; from creating computer programs with code to designing multimedia presentations. Introducing our students to these cutting edge skills will open tremendous doors for them and help prepare them for higher education. Our 5th graders have already completed a Google Coding Competition and they are extremely motivated to learn more about this intricate skill. Our hope is that coding will soon become a hobby of many of our students.
Secondly, we plan on using the Chromebooks to completely revamp our writing class. Students will learn how to use Google Docs to write, edit, and collaborate with others on their writing assignments. The Chromebooks will allow teachers to give students feedback on their writing in real time. It will streamline the writing process and allow students to not only revise their writing in much greater detail but also complete writing assignments in a shorter timeframe. Lastly, using Google Docs in our writing class will give parents the opportunity to see what their children are writing and encourage them as they improve their writing skills.
Finally, these Chromebooks will be used regularly to teach kids how to conduct research. We will guide students as they learn what to search for, how to know if a resource is reliable, and how to skim through an article for information they need. This is an invaluable skill that can only be learned with a tremendous amount of practice and guidance. Having regular and reliable access to technology will certainly provide this practice time and help prepare our students for life outside Lolo School.
