My students require higher supports with mental math strategies, and other concepts that are more abstract, such as social skills, conventions of conversation, and recognizing feelings. These items would help pair a visual with these less tangible concepts. Imagine sitting down to teach a student how to regroup and “borrow” within a 2 or 3 digit subtraction lesson. In order to introduce this concept, I need to give my students something tangible. I have also added in items to help them practice recognizing the emotions of others. This is important for their success with their peers.
