I am an occupational therapist at a specialized school responsible for creating/updating sensory rooms as well as incorporating sensory experiences into the classrooms (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, vestibular and proprioceptive). Not only this, but individual sessions are held for kids falling behind in class for various reasons including: poor fine motor skills, gross motor deficits, decreased attention span, poor self-regulation and cognitive deficits. Without a budget, I am in need of items that will help the child explore their sensory needs as well as objects that will help them learn necessary skills to excel in the classroom. For the sensory breaks taken in the sensory room, this includes items such as: swings for vestibular input, ball pit and tunnel for proprioceptive skills, various toys for fine motor and cognitive skills, different lights for visual exploration, items to challenge balance, different textures to touch and stimulating or calming smells/noises. For individual sessions, items such as grip strengtheners, adapted pencil grips, grid paper, wobble cushions and fidget bands are needed. As this is structured time, having timers is a necessity for kids to understand the start and end of sessions without any surprises (preventing meltdowns). Overall, it is super important that children get their sensory and educational needs met within regards to their current abilities/deficits.
