My students attend a small rural school in the Arkansas Delta region. In my 17 years as a teacher, I've been exclusively in this area. Many of my students are economically disadvantaged, and we are considered a Title I school. As a result, I rely on outside funding to provide opportunities for my students. In all my years teaching in this area, I've seen many constants. Most kids in my classroom every day come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and the education they receive can mean the difference between a life of fulfillment or a life of struggle. I teach students in grades 9-12 in both English and journalism. My first year at this school, I am working to develop the school's journalism program and focus on literacy. My journalism students have already started an online newspaper, and my English students have started voraciously reading.
