Is anyone listening? I know you HEAR me but are you LISTENING? Hearing is simply the physical act of receiving sound stimulation through the ear and sending it to the brain for reception. Listening, however, involves a mental process of tuning into a sound, recognizing its importance, and interpreting the information at the brain. Many children from low-income families are not engaged in conversations that would help them develop listening skills and their vocabulary. I am a kindergarten teacher at a Title I school. Many of my students are ESL students and most are from low-income families.
